All because Google announced last month that they are were using HTTPS/SSL as a ranking signal in their search algorithms.

What is HTTPS/ SSL?

Barry added ‘Google may decide to strengthen the HTTPS ranking signal over a sustained period to allow webmasters time to switch to HTTPS, but at present this remains undecided’.
The SSL ranking boost are applied to pages that have SSL on them and only those pages, this means that E-commerce websites that already use SSL on their Checkout forms, will still have to convert their domain names, URLS and files to HTTPS, this will then give them the full benefits of the ranking boost.
This is where the concern appears.
This is where you will have to spend a large amount of time testing everything, making sure the HTTPS certificate(s) do not spring any errors on your users.
Errors are a guareneed way to lose visitors – effectivly increasing your drop out rates.
Remember – You should always modify your images and videos, making sure that they will not give you any problems when viewed, this is another major issue that has a negative impact on your SEO.
There are not really any drawbacks when switching to SSL.
There are no negative ranking changes.
Google have added extra support dimensions to Google Webmaster Tools, all to support the HTTPS vs HTTP reporting.
When completing a successful change over to SSL, always remember the following.

- Decide on the kind of certificate you need: single, multi-domain, or wildcard certificate
- Use 2048-bit key certificates
- Use relative URLs for resources that reside on the same secure domain
- Use protocol relative URLs for all other domains
- Do not block your HTTPS site from crawling using robots.txt
- Allow indexing of your pages by search engines where possible and avoid the noindex robots meta tag
