SEO Grimsby News – HTTPs and Google
What Is HTTPs
HTTPs (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is a secure communications protocol used for secure communications over a computer network, HTTPs is a much more secure version of HTTP.
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is a system that is used for transmitting and receiving information across the Internet.
HTTP uses a request and response procedure that all agents on the Internet follow, meaning that information can be quickly, easily, and accurately broadcast between servers, which hold information, and clients, who are trying to access it.
HTTP is commonly used to access HTML pages, but other resources can be utilised via HTTP.
In many cases, clients may be exchanging confidential information with a server, which needs to be secured in order to prevent unauthorised access.
For this reason, HTTPs, or secure HTTP, was developed by the Netscape corporation, to allow authorisation and secured transactions.
In many ways, HTTPs is identical to HTTP, because it has the same basic protocols.
The main motivation for HTTPs is to prevent wire-tapping and attacks from outside sources.
There are a few differences between http and https, beginning with the default port – http uses port 80 wherby https uses port 443.
HTTPs works by transmitting normal http interactions through an encrypted system, so that in theory, the information cannot be accessed by anyone other than the client and end server.
There are two common types of encryption layers:
- Transport Layer Security (TLS)
- Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
Both encryption layers encode the data records being exchanged.
When using an https connection, the server responds to the initial connection by offering a list of encryption methods that it supports.
A selection is then made as to which connection method is used, and the client and server exchange certificates to authenticate their own identities.
After this has been completed, both parties will exchange the encrypted information after ensuring that both are using the same key, and the connection is closed.
In order to host https connections, a server must have a public key certificate, which embeds key information with a verification of the key owner’s identity.
Most certificates are verified by a third party so that clients are assured that the key is secure.
HTTPs is used in many situations, such as log in pages for banking, forms, corporate log ons, and other applications in which data needs to be secure.
If this is not implemented properly, HTTPs is not bulletproof, and therefore it is extremely important for end users to be wary about accepting questionable certificates and cautious with their personal information while using the Internet.
‘We’re starting to use HTTPs as a ranking signal. For now it’s only a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content.’
Why Is Google Giving HTTPs Websites A Boost
There is real obvious reason why HTTPs websites would be getting a boost.
Websites with low quality content and bad backlinks are still bad, even if they do use HTTPs.
Normally, HTTPs is only used for web pages that require users to enter sensitive information (payment data, address data or secure information).
Using HTTPs on any other page does not create any benefit to the user experience.
Google says that HTTPs is only a very small part of the ranking process at the moment – This means that there are many other much more important things to consider first.
- The content of your web pages are a very important factor
- The keywords for which you want to get high rankings should appear in the right elements on your pages
- Your web pages should also have good back-links from other sites – Without good back-links, your pages will not get high rankings
Adding HTTPs to your website may move your pages up the rankings by 20 pages or so, but nothing significant.
